“I need to build something for the future of my family and all asylum-seekers and refugees.” Ellie is one of the new-Irish, with a passion for food believing that it brings people together. It’s how we welcome people into our homes, share cultural traditions, and build community. She came to Ireland from Malawi in 2010 and spent the last eight years living in the Direct Provision system with her children. To channel her love of cooking and hospitality and to challenge the Direct Provision system, Ellie co-founded Our Table in 2015. The project is non-profit and growing. It operates pop-up café’s in Dublin and catering services countrywide, all the while challenging the dehumanising system that is Direct Provision for asylum seekers in Ireland. “Pure love of life is in what we share with others”, Ellie says.
